Two decades treating patients. One emergency surgery that turned him into one. Here's why he built The Second Half — and why he believes health has to be built long before you need it.
My interest in health started long before I ever heard the words "functional medicine." I grew up watching two people I loved experience health in completely different ways — and that contrast has shaped everything about how I practice medicine today.
My father believed you had to participate in your own health. Long before it was popular, he believed in chiropractic care, nutrition, exercise, and taking responsibility for his own body. He lived to be 94.
My mother's story was different. When I was 11, she was diagnosed with cancer. I watched her fight — she changed how she ate, she juiced, she meditated, she searched for answers. I lost her when I was 22.
At that age, I didn't have all the answers. But I had one question that has followed me for the rest of my life.
Decades later, life gave me another lesson — this time from the other side of the hospital bed. After a career spent helping other people with their health, I suddenly developed an intestinal obstruction and needed emergency surgery. In a matter of hours, I went from being the doctor and lifelong athlete to being the patient.
It taught me something I couldn't have learned any other way: you don't know when life is going to ask your body to fight. That's why you build health before you need it.
I don't believe conventional medicine is the enemy — emergency medicine and surgery saved my life. My concern is with a healthcare model that only gets involved after someone is already sick. I became obsessed with a different question: what was happening in this person's body during the five, ten, or twenty years before the diagnosis?
That's the work I do now. Not managing a diagnosis — understanding the person in front of me, and helping them build the strength, energy, and resilience it takes to stay in the fight, whatever that fight turns out to be.
I'm not simply interested in how long someone lives — I'm interested in how capable they are while they're living. Strong. Clear-headed. Metabolically healthy. Able to travel, work if they choose, train, get off the floor, and keep up with the people they love.
That's why I created The Second Half — for successful executives, entrepreneurs, and high performers whose health has quietly started falling behind everything else they've built.
Maybe you recognize yourself in some of this. Maybe you've spent the last twenty or thirty years taking care of everyone and everything except yourself — building the career, the business, the life. And somewhere along the way, your body started sending you signals. One call is where it starts.
